5 Things I've Learned In 5 Years of Giving Facials
When I started esthetics school in 2017, I knew I wanted to travel down the route of holistic skincare but I had no idea how I would get there. I didn’t know anyone in the industry nor did I know what questions to ask at first, but I did know that my passion, fascination and curiosity for skin was ingrained in me. It felt like if I didn’t go down this route I would be denying the most authentic version of myself.
I share this because I find it so easy to focus on the future without acknowledging what has brought me to the present, and I imagine I’m not alone in that. I also find that throughout the last 5 years, the people around me have been the most expansive part of my growth. I can only dream that I might be able to be an expander in some capacity for someone else.
I always try to do some reflection on my birthday as a personal ‘new year’ and looking back I realized it’s been 5 years since I started this holistic skincare journey. After some major reflection these lessons/mantras kept surfacing onto the pages of my journal. I hope they’re helpful whether you’re a skincare lover, an esthetician or on the road to discovering your authenticity.
Abundance is not just a mindset, it’s a way of living. I could have abundant thoughts all day long but if I acted with feelings of competition or scarcity, I would in no way be where I am today.
Plants are majorly cool. I’ve witnessed firsthand how plants can heal and transform skin. It is one of the most amazing parts of my job…plant-based skincare backed by science, perfected by nature (and the humans that make the skincare).
Don’t let feelings of shame or embarrassment keep you from learning. This is something I’ve recently been reminding myself of. When I started taking French lessons last year, I would let my fear of not knowing what words to speak keep me from trying at all. Then I realized that’s all part of the learning process. C’est la vie!
When you need rest, take it. I’ve seen the transformation when you’ve come into my treatment room and had an hour or two of rest. Remember that feeling and know that rest is a necessity and not an indulgence.
Our skin really is badass. It does so many things every second of the day that we aren’t even aware of. Our skin really does take care of itself. It’s also part of what makes us so uniquely different as humans since no two people have the same exact skin. Treat your skin with good care and it will certainly continue to care for you.
If you have a lesson or mantra that you’ve picked up along the way or one you keep coming back to I’d love to know!
